Tips and Tactics for Optimizing Your Business

One of my cars is a 25 year old Volvo. Love that car. Hate it too sometimes – especially when it comes time to dig into the next fix that an aging auto requires. Recently it began firing on 3 instead of 4 cylinders. Gas mileage plummeted, performance tanked, noise levels increased, and the vehicle shook like an old Model T on a corduroy road.
Like cars, businesses without proper timing and optimization may function, but the whole experience will be terrible, both for the client and the business itself. Here are a few tips for giving your business a tune up:
5. Make sure your processes are people friendly
In a day when technology is readily available we can fall for the delusion that software will fix what’s broke. Software is great (more about that in a moment) but people are what make a business function. Sometimes process is built in theory by the idealist who succeeds in his or her own utopia, but fails in the real world muck of where business gets done. Remember, business processes should be simple, foolproof, and transparent for best results.
4. Get the right tools and get rid of all the rest
Businesses tend to collect tools and software over time. Our emails are crawling with the next software fix and we can easily succumb to the temptation to bandage a people problem with a tool fix. Do you really need all the things you can’t remember passwords for?
3. Hire the right person for the job
List out everybody at your company and write out what they actually do (not what their job title is). Ask yourself this question, “If my business were a sport’s team, would this individual be my first pick for that role?” If not – is there another fit for them in the company, or do you need to put a succession plan in place? Sometimes, just a minor personnel adjustment or a blessed subtraction can equal a big return.
2. Put the right incentives in place and don’t keep changing them
Funny thing – most businesses understand the need for strong, reliable marketplace incentives when it comes to doing business in a given region. Those same businesses don’t always take the time to ask themselves what will motivate and inspire their team to be the very best in their field.
1. Get rid of energy suckers, time takers, and revenue drainers
Every business has a list of things they need to stop doing (or they should have). Get your team together and make a top five list of the things you all hate doing, the things you are doing but make you know money, and the things you do that take up way too much time for the reward gained. Work on ways you can eliminate or minimize these activities so that you can have more time for the things that really matter.
Every vehicle owner knows that regular tune-ups and oil changes are necessary to keep things running smoothly. Don’t allow your company to get caught in the grind of the urgent while ignoring the adjustments you can make to lower liabilities and increase both the fun and the profits of your business.
Intelligen offers companies in the renewable sector the opportunity to bring their business in for a tune-up. The high demands of this growing industry require companies that are functioning at the top of their power-curve.
